(I cannot say enough about how professional and nice they were at Gene’s. Greg made-up reducers and pipe for me to get temporary exhaust on the car so I could drive it to the shop. He did this three months before I could return for the system and did not charge me a dime! I had never been there before and they didn’t know me from Adam. Flowmaster referred me to them.)

ENGINE OUTPUT
HP: 510 at 5200 rpm Torque: 570 lbs-ft, at 4,100 rpm
COMMENTS: I had a very slightly used Gen VI 502 HO taking up space in the garage for several years. I discarded everything except the block, crank, rods, pistons, roller lifters, push rods, and oil pump. I put in new rings for piece-of-mind (cylinders still had crosshatch pattern) and checked bearings (okay). Due to clearance problems with installed 1968 steering geometry, a Chevelle oil pan was used. Installed a new cam, new assembled GM oval port aluminum heads, and a new GM aluminum water pump. From a lucky find at Long Beach swap meet I scored a new GM intake, new GM roller rockers, new GM 502 850 CFM Holley, and a new GM 502 HEI distributor. Note that I tapped the front of the intake manifold for heater hose nipple. Just took a few minutes and hose routing is 100 times neater than just doing the lazy thing and using an existing hole it the top of the manifold.
DRIVELINE
Type: Rear Wheel Drive
Transmission: Tremec TKO II Road Race – high nickel content gears, 0.83 fifth gear. New (crate transmission). Rated for 550 lbs-ft of torque (we’re there). Modified for use on a Chevrolet by, and purchased from, (Eric) Swarr Automotive – Graterford, Pa.
Shifter: Shift lever was made by grafting the top part of an original 65 bench seat Muncie lever to a reversed Mustang bottom section that retains the rubber isolator required by Tremec to maintain warranty. I have a picture of the how this was done. Great care was taken to orient the lever in all three planes during this operation so that it is in the proper location for comfortable use without stretching. Note: when shifting, I don’t even notice the isolator – doesn’t feel mushy at all.
Clutch Disc: Center Force (11”) Pressure Plate: Center Force
Bellhousing: NOS GM for 1969 big block Flywheel: GM Performance Parts, 168 tooth
Drive Shaft (make, length, u-joints): Denny’s Driveshaft, 3 ½” diameter steel - Heavy Duty, 58 13/16” long, 1330 solid U-Joints.
Rearend (make, type, year): Chevrolet, 12 bolt, taken from a 68 Chevy wagon
Ring and Pinion (make, ratio): GM, 3:31 Axles: Currie
Other Rearend Mods: Currie modified the housing by welding on Ford tube ends for big Ford axle bearings (no more C clips), Axle was not narrowed. Installed a new Eaton Posi, set-up the ring and pinion with all new bearings, and buttoned it up with a TA aluminum cover with ring gear bearing cap supports (to insure it will withstand 600 HP). They finished it up by whittling new axles to make it all work.
CHASSIS
Frame: Original
Frame Modifications: Hard point for 68 steering system idler arm added to right frame rail. (This was very critical to insure steering geometry was not comprised.) The only other mod was to remove the transmission crossmember brackets and weld new ones in the correct location to position stock crossmenber for use with the Tremec transmission.
SUSPENSION
Front Suspension (make, type): Lower control arms from 68 Impala (needed for sway bar brackets), upper control arms are original 65.
Front Springs (make, rate, model): Eaton Spring, xxx lbs/in, Part Number MC 1330
Front Shocks: Delco gas
Front Sway Bar (make, size): PST (Performance Suspension Technology), 1 1/8”
Front Spindles: 1970 Impala
Front Bushings: PST Polygraphite
Steering System: Steering system converted to 67~70 design for improved handling. This involved utilizing a 68 idler arm (with modified frame mount) and a 68 center link along with the 70 spindles. Modified Corvette pump on special custom brackets. Pressure hose is NOS for a 67 small block – fits perfectly.
Steering Box: NOS GM, variable ratio
Steering Column: Original 3 speed column stripped, shift tube and levers removed, collar replaced with floor shift version. Column repainted.
Rear Suspension (make, type): Original 65 upper control arms (modified) and 68 lower control arms (modified). AirLift air bags.
Rear Springs (make, rate, model): Eaton Spring, 252 lbs/in, Part Number MC 1307
Rear Shocks: Air cooled (finned tube) vintage (new) from ebay.
Rear Sway Bar (make, size): GM NOS F41
Panhard Bar: Original bar bent to clear TA aluminum rearend cover, cut and lengthened to restore original bushing to bushing dimension. PST Polygraphite panhard bushings.
Rear Bushings: PST Polygraphite
COMMENT: With this setup there is no wheel hop or any other traction problems I can detect on street tires.
BRAKES, WHEELS, and TIRES
Front Brakes: 69 Caprice disks Rear Brakes: Ford Explorer disks
Brake Booster: 74 Corvette, 8” dual diaphragm for 4 wheel disk brakes.
Master Cylinder: 74 Corvette for 4 wheel disk brakes.
Note: Booster and master cylinder from Power Brake Service, Long Beach. I did this as a result of Matt’s article on his 65 Biscayne brake problems and solution.
BODY
Body: It’s the one the car left the factory with – no damage ever. No modifications. Other than replacing the body side moldings and sill plates with NOS pieces, all the trim, emblems. Grill, and bumpers are original. I polished the stainless and just cleaned everything else. I did add the NOS cross flag, and aftermarket 502 call-out emblems.
Body Work: None required – no wheel tubs.
Paint: Black, DuPont, Croma One, single stage
Painted by: Hanson’s Auto Craft - La Habra, CA
