Against drag racing

Im 46 yrs old ive always wanted to drag race, never had the money w/kids wives... but i bought a new gt stang last year, and i want to occasionally race at the drag strip... and all i hear is negative, negative from friends and coworkers!!!!!Too expensive, waste of $$$$$ too dangerous blah, blah, blah, economy too tight!!!!Whatever happened too having fun and enjoying life...Kinda gets too me afterwhile!!!! Am i a bad guy or what!!! sure if i had the $$$ ide build a 10 sec car but i cant afford it...thats another one i hear it aint worth it to go 13 sec and over... Is it wrong for me too have a little fun guys????

BEAST477 03-13-2009 04:38 PM

Nothing wrong with having fun and besides you're doing it legally. Ask any of these nay sayers what they do for fun. I bet it's not free and as long as they aren't financing you i'd tell them where to get off.
Do what ya gotta do to have fun you only live once.

RonOwensRacing 03-13-2009 04:40 PM

Well the way i look at it is if it makes you happy and you can enjoy what you have worked for then you should do it there is nothing wrong with trying to enjoy life a little as long as the family is taken care of and it isn't hurting anyone then go for it.

And that is why they call it bracket racing they don't write the check out to the fastest guy at the track it is the one that is the most consistent and who cares if it runs 13 seconds or 18 seconds you can drive it to the track have some fun and drive home and have a good time doing it so i say go for it and be safe and have fun.

MEMRACING62 03-13-2009 04:52 PM

whats with your friends & co workers , are they weenes. are they all wearing the pink shorts there wives & girl friends bought for them. be safe & have some fun. :P :P

slowmotion 03-13-2009 05:23 PM

Going to Test & Tune night is cheaper than a night at the bar. Racing a stock production vehicle can be cheap and fun. It's when you start changing things it gets expensive. Going faster means more safety equipment. Power adders will find the weak parts. Too radical and you'll need a truck and trailer. I raced stock engined cars for years before stepping up and I had a ton of fun.

TheYellaBrick 03-13-2009 05:35 PM

Sounds like you're hanging with the wrong people....I hang with folks who WANT to see me be happy, have fun, be successful in business and life. They LIFT me up NOT drag me down.

signsbyesa 03-13-2009 05:51 PM

on the next business day, open and block the front door open,
bring your car to the door and burn the rubber off your car
and then ask them, how you like me now, whhaaaaaaaaaaaa

MEMRACING62 03-13-2009 05:56 PM

yea, if they dont like the smell of burning rubber, there not real men!!! :P :P

It is unfortunate that our sport is so misunderstood. It truly is none of your coworkers business how you spend your time or money. I believe if a man is taking care of his family and responsibilities then having a hobby is a good thing. Everyone needs a stress reliever, one as family oriented at this should be a good thing.

I would think that your friends would know what kind of a man you are and would support you in whatever you wanted to do. Maybe they need to be educated about our pastime.

Maybe all of those people should give up their cable, internet, cell phones, eating out, hobbies, etc... they all cost money that could be used for something really important or saved for a rainy day.

Well that is my rant for the night, I hope you get to the track and have as much fun as I do. If you do though you will be hooked for life so just accept it.

Curtis

P.S. I started gathering parts for my car in 1997. Finally got to race a car of my own starting last year, I'm 44. I've been going racing since I was 13 don't give up.

THERATTLER 03-13-2009 07:48 PM

If I cared what my friends thought( wait , don't have any)or what my co workers thought (wup , don't work anywhere) oh , well , I guess I don't have a dog in this race

spib 03-13-2009 09:39 PM

get out there and race sportsman et, have a blast and if they dont like it the hell with them!!!!!!!! a lot of people have told me there first cars or trucks they raced were there funniest times, the faster you go the more it cost, but you dont have to go fast to have fun :D

Go to thhe track you'll find more friends at the track than you'll ever lose for doing it take you wife get her involved you'll both love, it's called a family sport just for that reason. I've raced since i was 16 yrs. old with a few breaks, just clicked over 70 and almost ready to go again this yr. and can't wait to get there.

How many of these friends have golf club memberships, fishing or speed boats? You can drag race on the cheap and have a blast. The trouble with racing is it seems you always want to go faster and then it gets a little more expensive. But, you'll enjoy yourself and meet some great people that enjoy the same hobby. It's a family sport so you can get the wife involved too. She may want to try it out also, then you're a crewchief until you get her a car of her own!!

markadams 03-14-2009 03:57 PM

Add in their season tickets to football, basketball, hockey or and other sport/hobby THEY all enjoy and spend THEIR money on. I was out of racing for 25 years and started back about 3 years ago. Now I'm building a new tube car. Its all about what YOU like. Don't deny yourself enjoyment. If they don't support your hobby, there are a ton of people here (RJ) and at the tracks you will have common interests with. You will have a blast no matter what you race. Our test and tune nights cost only $15 to race. I don't know of anything that is that cheap for all that fun.

THERATTLER 03-14-2009 07:28 PM

I knew a guy who's wife kept busting his chops that all they ever did was go racing...and that she wanted to go camping more and racing less....SOO, he did what any loving husband would do. He bought her a motor home and took her camping....

at the drag strip.

turns out motor homes can pull a race car trailer pretty good.

outlaw256 03-15-2009 12:02 AM

your a grown man. tell them to bite your but and go racing. spend what you want (family first ) do what you want. tell the wife and kids you go do your thing ill go do my thing and when we get home we will do our thing.at least that works for me.ive been married to the same little lady for 31 yrs. and she has never told me not to do something. ive spent a small fortune on bikes and cars(after the bills are paid) and she has never said i couldnt or shouldnt. gotta go hug her right now and tell her how lucky i am to have her in my life!!!!!

markadams 03-15-2009 04:09 AM

Bruce, both Mooresville and Jefferson-Pageland. Rarely though. I am planning to run Z-max this season with the new car. Don't think I'll be ready for the start of the pro tree eliminator series in late April, but I'm trying. You may have seen me, I had the red with white flames S-10 Blazer. This year a '63 vette. (same slow engine) Should be fun!

markadams 03-15-2009 04:12 AM

Sorry Bjuice, called you Bruce. Hope I didn't offend or insult. Tired eyes. Need coffee.

Should I take offence to that slip, apology Mark?

bjuice 03-15-2009 06:15 AM

lol..i hear ya Bruce and Mark.

Mark do you know a guy from Fort Mill who runs the T-bird with the BBC ..His 1st name is Phil...(real nice guy)..country like the rest of us Southern boys
anyhow my cousin has a grude race with him next week. was gonna be today but the rain cancelled the 10.5 race at Shadyside.

markadams 03-15-2009 08:00 AM

What have I gotten myself into this time! Sorry Bruce, sorry Bjuice. Hows that? Man this is FUN!

markadams 03-15-2009 11:02 AM

Bjuice, I am surprised I don't know that guy with the T-bird. I teach Auto Tech here in Fort Mill and have over 100 kids in the program, but they have never mentioned him before. Funny how things are overlooked in your own back yard. I have heard there is a guy with a real nice Buick Grand National drag car in my subdivision, don't even know his name...
Well, back to welding practice!

Scooterz 03-15-2009 07:57 PM

"Just My Opinion"... if you were to die tommorow, wouldn't you have liked to have tried racing? My biggest fear is that I will check out & look back and say "dang I should have tried that!!" Be aware that the same inner-child telling you to race is the same one who will feed this awesome sport & addiction for years to come... it is in your blood already... go light it up. Scooter

my wife wanted a nice camper with cold air conditioner so we could go camping, the camper has only been at our house or a drag strip, and now we have a two car car trailer so we both can race LOL

Everyone has something that they do for enjoyment or to just get away and believe it cost something to be able to do it. Fishing, hunting, going to the boats to gamble, going to bingo, listen to the opera, going to a concert etc. it all cost money. As long as it does not take food or money away from your responsiblities and it does not keep from having a relationship with the Lord I say it is okay.

EZstreet9s 03-17-2009 01:59 PM

Man what a drag!!

You really need to just do what you want to do! I dont let anyone tell me what I should and should not do! A real friend would want you to do what ever makes you happy and support what you do! Good luck, have fun and do it safe!

Our passion (be it drag racing, shows, hot rods, circle track etc...) is so COMPLETLEY misunderstood by the bean-counter nerds of the world!!! It is in your blood or is not not... no in between in my opinion. My mother in law heard my car a few months ago when she was over that night. It was vibrating the windows... she yelled to my wife: why doesn't he put some mufflers on that thing!!! My answer: "it does have mufflers"... just not the same ones on your slow & over emissioned, bogged down mini-van that looks like a 8-person DUSTBUSTER. I told her she likes to scrap-book, sew, & bake little things... I like the smell of race fuel, burnt rubber & high compression motors w/ lopey cams... get off my back. She knew I was joking, but inside her I could see she had no idea why I do what I do. Case & point: we are misunderstood... sometimes outcasts... we make noise & love to go fast quickly... "the other people" will never understand us the same as a alcoholic does not understand sobriety or "passing" on a stiff drink.
