Do you talk racing with coworkers?

Do you ever discuss racing with people you work with? Not just your racing. Is the Monday morning chat ever about how you did, the NHRA race on TV, Where Tony Stewart finished, PINKS, SCCA or whatever?

The people I work with in my department couldn care less about anything motorsports related. A couple of them might rarely catch part of a NASCAR race. I think it's just because it's on at the bar. I've took National Dragsters to work to see if anybody even looked at them. Usually they don't even pick it up. They hate the sound of race cars. They don't care for racers. They don't know a Pro Mod from a 12 sec street car.

Did I mention I work at a race track? :?

They have free access to any event they would like to come out and see. Drags, SCCA, Autocross, MCRA, and many others and they NEVER come out unless it's an event they have to work.

Amazing ! I give my left one to work at a race track !!
If ya gotta 'splain it to 'em, they just wouldn't understand. :?

Harbone 08-04-2009 07:47 AM

are they taking any applications for employment? I have 20+ years in automotive management and would LOVE to work at the track! Then you would have someone to talk to all day about racing...

Scooterz 08-04-2009 08:49 AM

Man, as much as I hate to say it, I am the olny one here who has a race car/Hot Rod. I have only driven my 69 camaro to work like 2 times... which is a pain cause it has 488's & I have to stay away from the freeway. Everyone I work with has a story about someone they know that had a fast car... I get to hear them ALL!! One dude always talks about his old Maverick Grabber he had... I will shoot myself if he brings up that car again. Mostly work with 4wd folks here.... there are a few cool rack-crawlers though.

CamBirdRacing 08-04-2009 10:43 AM

I work with a guy who's uncle used to rebuild his 302 Ford after every race. I guess being a Ford I can understand that.

FullTimeRacing 08-04-2009 12:47 PM

I hate talking about cars,,,,,being that I working on them allday.

but racing,I just let them talk thenI tell them It's fake and they look at me all stupid,"but you race".

I just laugh in side

I am the only one here but several USED to have 3/4 cammed vette motored monsters. Now they drive a minivan of coarse.

DirkaDirka 08-04-2009 02:03 PM

So when are yougonna trade that 3/4 cammed vette motored monster for a minvan?

TheYellaBrick 08-04-2009 03:35 PM

Have the best of both worlds !! A 3/4 cammed monster in a mini van !!

CamBirdRacing 08-04-2009 07:05 PM

I thought all motors had full cams in them. I guess if a Corvette motor had a 3/4 cam in it, then it would be a V-6?

RonOwensRacing 08-04-2009 07:29 PM

Well i do get to talk about racing a lot because of my parts business and my customers get to let me know how they enjoyed beating me .
And i buy and wholesale cars for a large dealer and a auto auction so I'm around it all the time and of course they all want me to tell them what they should do to there engine's or what they need to do.
I guess i will start telling them to get a 3/4 cam that would help.

ashbros 08-04-2009 07:32 PM

Very seldom do I have anyone relate to me that they have attended a drag race event, buy every once in a while you get one or two of them guys that proclaim they have mastered the power of their old streeet machine monster, WITH OF COURSE A 3/4 Race Cam.

Have you ever had the unique experience to have been in the presence of a guy who had a FULL RACE CAM in his car.

If you ever listen to anyoone describe their race cam there is a distinct difference between a 3/4 race and a full Race cam.

If you have ever heard anyone tell you about their full race cam CAM-Arrow, you know what I mean. Even when they say Full Race Cam, those three words seem to roll off their tongue in slow motion, but with emphisis and a little "I had a full race cam Swagger". Last but not least they look at you like you have never had one, there ain't no way. Mine was a special grind, a "ONE OFF" or A "ONE OF A KIND". H_LL, it was so bad ass they quit making it.... Too may people were getting hurt by wrapping their cars around telephone poles....

Last year I met a guy who told me a story about his old car that he ended up selling that had a FUUULLLLLLL race cam in'ner. Needless to say that story took over an hour and it was one of those stories that you wish you never had to hear......... :? :? :?

DirkaDirka 08-04-2009 07:40 PM

Well I have a story for you guys.......

I had a 1970 Ranchero. It was fast. It didnt have a full race cam or a 3/4 cam. I think it had a 1/4 cam. I just wish I had a 3/4 cam in it. Or I should have put a Vette motor with 3/4 cam in it.

russ67chevelle 08-04-2009 09:11 PM

my lawnmower has a couple 3/4 cams in er

Before I got hurt at work, every Monday my boss would talk about nascar and one of the other guys would talk about his dirt track car. When I had one of my cars in the warehouse the other people that don't know anything about cars thought it had spare tires on the front because of the skinny tires. I told them you don't need big tires in the front because real race cars go in a straight line. :)

I had my car in the shop at work with the body off. My boss is an excellent welder and was going to fix a couple of things for me. The ticketing manager walked in and said "Cool! Who's dune buggy is this?" He was completely serious. :? We all know dune buggies have BBC in the front and slicks on the back.http://www.stlsr.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif

Scooterz 08-06-2009 03:38 PM

Anyone heard of the illusive "Split Cam??" Oh yeah, a mexican kid I knew in high school had a primer 69 Mach 1 w/a 302 & a Split Cam. I heard it run... it did have a lope to it... but more like a RV Cam or 3/8 cam. I asked him: "What is a split cam?" He said: "I am not sure, my uncle (Ernesto) built the motor, but it some kind of new cam". He actually painted the headers that chrome paint color ... man, it was hedious. Maybe you have to be sponsored by Crane to have a full/split cam...

outlaw256 08-07-2009 03:58 AM

i get a kick out of 3/4 or full race cam shi$.i sold hi po parts for 25 yrs.and i dont ever remember seeing them listed that way, until a real ol timer came in with a old book and all it had was flathead speed parts and sure as shi$ in black and white was a listing as 3/4 cams!/ but not on conventional v8s. hey scooter i bet the mexican was talkin about split duration cams.

TheRabbit 08-07-2009 05:09 AM

Hey Slow Motion, hows the dune buggy doing!! LOL What a dip schitte!!

I don't watch Nascar. I can't sit still for more than 30 mins or an hr or I'll go nuts.
I'm in sales and go to every contractor's office and every job site and I hate hearing guys talk about Nascar on Mondays. As you know everybody can drive so much better than so and so. Nobody at my office talkes about any kind racing or even has a clue what a 3/4 cam is!! lol

Doing just fine. When my paddle tires come in I'll race ya! :D

WOW, What a weekend. ADRL Promods were here. Friday I worked from 7am till 11:30pm. Saturday was 7am till 1:00 am the next morning. It was an awesome event.

On my crew, one guy begged to leave early on Sat because his buddies were having a big drunken party at the lake. They let him leave about 4pm. He never watched a single pass down the track.

We use Kawasaki Mules to get around property. I have a spot behind the drag tower that if you stand in the back of the Mule you can see over everybody and directly down the track. I had another guy with me at one point and asked him if he wanted to watch a few passes from back there. His reply was something like "Hell no, Get me back to the maint. building."

When the rest of the guys weren't busy, They usually hide in the maint. building with the doors closed so the don't have to listen to the cars.

I got to stand out on the pro return road (in front of the grandstands) at about 1000' and watch the last few rounds. It was VERY cool.

The crowd was the biggest we've ever had at a drag race. They had to close the event at about 6 or 7pm friday night. The gates were overwhelmed with people. Sat they closed the gate for a few hours in the aftetnoon. After some the crowd left, they reopened in the evening.
