Cold!

Friday was the coldest day I Nashville since 1996 and guess what happened. At 5:30 am on my way to work my truck decides it doesn't want to go to Nashville and quits!!! According to the thermometer at the house it was 11 degrees. The $3.09 a gallon gas I got a couple days ago was full of water and froze. The truck ran for 15 to 20 minutes defrosting in the driveway and it wait till I am on the road to die. It's suppose to be even colder the next couple days in the single digits I hate cold whether!

ajk 01-05-2014 06:18 AM

11 is nice, high of -15 tomorrow at the home of the "Frozen Tundra" may need the thermal underwear if it gets colder than that

bjuice 01-05-2014 07:21 AM

Put 3 bottles of HEET in the tank.

Swiley383 01-05-2014 07:53 AM

I put two bottles of heet in the tank I am gonna put a couple in my wife's jeep also it's suppose to be a high of 9 degrees and a low of 1 tommrow.

TheRabbit 01-05-2014 08:45 AM

11*, ouch that hurts!! Hope you get it thawed out.
I think it's suppose to get to 11 for us Monday night and a high of 40 Tuesday. I don't function well in that kind of cold. lol. My little garage is full of winter projects too. You can bet I'll have the truck plugged in every night next week.

I honestly, don't see how people live up north where it's 20 and 30+ below.
I guess mother nature has her way of keeping us separate. She keeps us southerns out of the north with the extreme cold and keeps the Yankees out of the south with the 100* + heat in the summer! lol

Swiley383 01-05-2014 09:08 AM

It in the high 40s right now but temp is suppose drop like a rock tonight and start snowing. I loses a bunch of weight a while back and now I can't handle cold at all guess I lost all my insulation. The temps are suppose to be almost 60 by next Saturday no wonder everybody keeps getting sick around here.

shybx1969 01-06-2014 04:59 PM

we had -20

Swiley383 01-06-2014 05:29 PM

4 degrees this morning windchill it suppose to be -7 tonight. The doors on my truck were froze shut this morning it rained then turned to sleet and snow last night. The roads were clear this morning but cold.

Harbone 01-06-2014 05:46 PM

-10° tonight, last night was -15° and that's before the wind chills of almost -40° with the 20+mph winds...

Swiley383 01-06-2014 06:24 PM

Too cold for me don't know how how you guys do it.

zipper06 01-06-2014 09:23 PM

9 degrees here tonite in La. and i'm only 100 miles from the gulfcoast, i don't like it at all in my old age. I grew up in Chgo. from my early teens until 34 yrs old, the cold didn't bother me then, but now i hate it. I lived in Phx. for over 20 yrs and went thru 110 degree summers, learned to live with that, so i guess i'd complain if i lived in the south pacific

Zip.

Its like when i visit my father in law in NC in summer..100deg everyday i said too him how do u do it.Old dude across the street wears long sleeve shirts...he said hes done it all his life..lol

TheYellaBrick 01-07-2014 08:08 AM

Long sleeves in high humidity is actually cooler as your sweat is wicked away through the cloth and acts as an air conditioner.

Yeppers and pale ass white boys like me keep from getting fried in the sun that way!

TheYellaBrick 01-07-2014 01:54 PM

Us old western boys sport a farmers tan year 'round. Too many older guys are ending up with skin cancers from too much sun exposure, so I wear jeans and T-shirts, ball cap, hardly ever 1/2 naked.

See us northern boys like me wear shorts, tshirt in 100 deg weather. But i wear cutoffs in the winter, if im moving around , unless its below zero, or im drag racing for safety...

TheRabbit 01-07-2014 02:06 PM

Weather man said we hit 12 last night ( not sure what the wind chill was) and the high today was only 28. My kitchen sink froze and that's only the second time it's done that since I've lived here. I had to put a heater under the sink for more than an hr to thaw it out and that was at 5:00pm.
Good news is it'll be 72 Saturday! lol

bjuice 01-08-2014 05:03 PM

Monday night was the coldest night since 1985. It froze up the well pump inside the brick well house. I took a Jet heater out of the shop and turned it on in the 12x12 well house and within an hour it broke free. That Jet Heater throws out some BTU's...its on the side Im thinking it said 60,000....does this sound right ? I will check it tomorrow.

csx8506 01-08-2014 08:32 PM

Cold

It got down to 16* here, in South Georgia, one nite, and 18* the other nite, one nite the wind chill was -5*F. I live in the country and didn't have any frozen pipes or water tank. I used to have frozen pipes very often, till I did a good bit of work, foam insulation, electrical heating wires with a thermostat that applies on your water pipes, and biggest help of all, was moving my 100 gallon water tank into a well insulated room that I added onto my house for that purpose. No heat inside the water tank room at all, just the water temp. out of the deep well of about 65* keeps it from freezing. Since I used to make my living as a carpenter, I did all the work myself.
I'm like a lot of other people on here, I don't see how you guys from up north cope with this type of weather! Many years ago, I was working in Birmingham, Al. and the outside temperature was 6*F and I asked myself "what was I doing here"!! dgh

Harbone 01-09-2014 08:17 AM

after 3 days of below zero and unbelievable wind shill temps its finally getting warm here today! I spent the last 2 days basically in a plow truck trying to get the dealership lot cleaned up.
now they are saying low to mid 40's this weekend with rain, crazy ass weather!

Spurger 01-09-2014 03:19 PM

well I see people saying, hey I'd rather have the weather from mars than the one here.

shybx1969 01-11-2014 01:16 AM

Gonna b 50deg w/rain today :D

Got mine yesterday $69.48. ( Im not on budget billing either) How do they expect people to pay these high bills? lol I'm cheap on some things and I hate high utility bills. Some of that bill was from using my welder a good bit last month.

TheYellaBrick 01-14-2014 09:04 PM

Swiley383 01-21-2014 04:44 PM

IMO, it was a blessing that you received a bonus right when you would need it. Gotta look on the bright side.

True

TheYellaBrick 01-29-2014 05:25 AM

Swiley383 01-29-2014 08:38 AM

More bad news I got a call this morning my wife's uncles house was on fire. Whent over there and it was on the ground apart stoped and beat on the door and woke him up he made it out ok thank god. I got back home to wait on the heat people and heard water running walk to the basement and the main supply line coming to the house busted and was flooding the basement. What a day

Holy crap!!!

I hope things get better cause I dont think they can get much worse.

On a serious note about the water in the basement, back in 2004 I had a guy that worked for me as a delivery driver, retired cop, I got a call from the PD looking for him on day after lunch. Turns out his basement had flooded, his wife and 18 year old son were trying to get the water out and were standing in about 4" of water. The water hit the bottom of the deep freeze and electrocuted them both. Neighbor found them about 4 hours later.
Just be careful!

TheRabbit 01-29-2014 11:38 AM

Atlanta got hit pretty bad yesterday. Part of the problem was terrible planning by the city and schools.
All decided to close at the same time and did it way to late.
There were some people stuck in traffic jams fro more than 14hrs.
A lot of kids didn't get out of school in time and had to spend the night at school.
It took my cousin 4hrs to get her kids out of school which was only 20miles away and one is a handicapped and in a wheel chair. Talk about be furious if she hadn't have been able to get him.
We had a 25 car pile up on one interstate this morning and many other wrecks on other roads and the other interstate hwy.
We only got about 3 inches of snow but it rained / sleeted for 2hrs before that. It was about 33, 34 today which melted a lot of the snow, but it's suppose to be 16 tonight.

I've had a problem every since I bought this house of my kitchen water line freezing every time it got down around 20 degrees.
I knew that a moron plumber put the water line all the way against the brick and probably didn't have any insulation
around it.
After it's frozen twice this year I figured I'd go ahead and tackle it before it busted. Needless to say I wasn't going to completely remove the entire kitchen counter top, sink, garbage disposal, dry wall, etc, so I cheated and just cut a small access panel out.
Needless to say it was a moron plumber for sure. The cold water line has a T that goes to an outside faucet and the pipe is pulled so tight into the wall there is no room for anything to go around it. They actually already hacked away at the inside of the brick to fit it in there. Not to mention a lot of air comes in through that hole and from somewhere else. I could feel a good draft blowing in this side of my house is well protected from the wind.

I had to use a chisel and hammer and cut a bunch of brick out to get enough room to wrap the line. As you know it's not much fun working under a sink all day much less lying on your back, stomach and side with a hammer and chisel then trying to insulate everything.

It's not pretty but it's done.

How it was

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps71d52d11.jpg

Some of it done. I actually removed every bit of the mortar and brick on the left and cleaned it all up so I could wrap it and get some foam behind it to stop any air from getting in. Whoops, knocked a hole all the way through by the faucet, but at least know I can get it wrapped all the way.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps1b716aa8.jpg

Almost finished and no more draft.

Swiley383 01-29-2014 06:06 PM

I found the leak before it cause major damage it must have bust right before I got back. Shut the water off at the road and knocked a whole in the drywall to let the water out so it would not fall on my head while I looked for the leak. I had to take down some drywall from the celling to find the pipe. Now for the heat going to have to replace the whole unit. It was going to cost almost as much to fix this as to replace it. The unit has struggled the last couple of summers so I knew it almost done but was hoping for one more year. Harbone I was concerned about electricity while I was pulling down the drywall. I did not think there were any wires in the area but I did not know for sure. I got the first piece down were I could see what was behind there and all was clear of wires.

Ok, now that is just adding insult to injury. Not a fun day I'm sure. I hope they get your heat back on soon.
