It is my understanding that the reason for the taper on some cheaper cranks is that they polish the journals to size...I may be wrong on that but I think I have read that on SPEEDTALK.
Mine measured within a tenth or two anywhere on the journal. I Checked it in three places on all the journals. I have all the measurements written down in a notebook somewhere. I did have bearing issues on number 2 and 4 mains. I asked the guy at Steve Schmidt to double check the crank for taper because of things I've read online and I didn't know how much was acceptable. he said it was fine. The bearing trouble was found to be caused by the rotating assembly being out od balance and the main bores in the block were too tight. It is a Merlin Block and had not been align honed when new.
