leave it in third gear until you nearly get to your turn out when you need first again. This will keep you from stalling on deceleration , and help take some work from the brakes at top speed in a controlled manor. I would never down shift to slow down unless my brakes failed. Most Racing converter \ trans combos do not give decell resistance in any gear but third or top gear any ways, they go neutral in second or first unless the engine is up to the same speed and the ratio selected. I have used a Coan XLT Big dog for years, and this is how I have shifted it and others before.
