fuel pressure and filter
i have a bg280 pump, filter is between fuel cell and pump, it's a bg5000 should it be on other side of pump or does it make no difference .........its worked fine for years but noticed fuel pressure has been eratic verry low 3-5 psi down track .......i was riding th car around in the pits warming it up and noticed fuel press was on zero i turned the fuel pump switch off and then back on it jumped up to 8 where it usually runs .........replaced regulator still no good 2nd round when i hit TB it fell on its face i thought it was going to die but it recovered just not fast enough ......... i went back to trailer hit TB before i cut it off it went right up on RPM against 2 step ...............i checked pressure at pump it was around 14 removed pressure relief spring shimmed it got press up to 21 could th press relief have been sticking or press set to low from manufacture im sure rasing press on pump will help ..........just wanting to hear th thoughts of others thanks

The filter is supposed to be before the pump to catch trash before it goes through the pump.I have one of the long Barry Grant fuel filters and just changed the filter in it.It ended up being a Wix filter.The original filter that came out of it had a Napa part number.

A few years ago I spent some time with a magna fuel rep at a PRI show. He stopped by to look at one of the trucks in our booth. I mentioned that my pump would blow a fuse every now and then. He asked me if mine was plumbed like the one on display which it was. ( with filter before the pump.
He told me to put the filter after the pump.
I said are you sure and again he said AFTER the pump.
It's harder on the pump to pull fuel through the filter and can cause the pump to pull more amps than it's designed to. Also any small trash you get will pass through the pump and into the filter and not drop fuel pressure.
Filter the fuel good before you put it in the tank and you shouldn't have any problems.
With that being said, even BG web site use to have a diagram that showed how to plumb a system and it showed the filter before the pump.
I swapped mine and put it on the out side of the pump after I talked to him and have never had any problems.

If you check with Aeromotive, they recommend an alcohol 150 steel mesh filter before the pump and a paper 40 mesh filter before the carb. I guess everyone didn't go to the same filter school in college.
I just use the 150 mesh before the pump. Not too much restriction, yet keeps out any bigger debri from getting to the needle and seat on a carb.
