Why chasing targets feels easier than defending

Recently I started paying more attention to how teams behave in different match situations, and something keeps bothering me. When they are trying to reach a target, their actions seem more confident and even logical. But when they already have a score to protect, everything becomes slower and more uncertain. It almost feels like they overthink simple decisions. I’m curious if this is just my perception or if there is an actual explanation behind this difference in behavior.
